Lucy Roche won the 2016 Raw Comedy Quest and has a show in the 2017 NZ International Comedy Festival called Dollars and Sex which you can buy tickets to here: https://www.comedyfestival.co.nz/find-a-show/dollars-and-sex/
I’m Lucy Roche and I first started comedy back in 2012 when I did the Class Comedians programme. I stopped doing comedy for a few years but got into it properly at the start of 2015.
My fest show is inspired by my job as a sex worker, my opinions on feminism and modern sex and dating.
Because it’s about something quite taboo. I think a lot of people are very curious about the sex industry, and if you are one of those people you should check it out! You will hopefully have your misconceptions challenged, and laugh a lot too.
Dirty, feminist, honest.
I think laughing at everything helps us cope with the world. It’s very therapeutic. Good comedy is also a way of connecting people who might otherwise not be exposed to each others viewpoints or life experiences.
I think that talking about sex work in my comedy is one of the things that makes me stand out from other comics. But apart from that, I try to keep them seperate!
I feel like it’s a three week long party. Also this year we got lots of free mayonnaise. So that’s a win.
Oh and getting to see so much awesome comedy. As a comedian, you can learn a lot by watching.
Have self awareness. If the audience isn’t laughing, notice, and change something.
1. Ray O’Leary- not just because he recommended me in his interview, but because he’s new and storming the scene with his incredibly smart, unique comedy: https://www.comedyfestival.co.nz/find-a-show/a-pessimists-guide-to-optimism/
2. From what I’ve seen of Rhys Nicholson, I’m super excited to check out his show (one night only!): https://www.comedyfestival.co.nz/find-a-show/im-fine/
3. I think Angella Dravid is a must-see, especially if you want something refreshingly different: https://www.comedyfestival.co.nz/find-a-show/down-the-rabbit-hole/
